Open Plan Was the Point of Your Kitchen Extension. It Might Be the Problem

Almost every kitchen extension brief arrives with the same three words attached. Open plan kitchen, dining and living, one room, everything connected.

It is a good idea that has been applied fairly indiscriminately. The households who end up disappointed are rarely disappointed by the architecture, and two of the most common complaints have regulatory answers most people never hear.

None of that argues against open plan. It argues against choosing it by default.

The Extraction Problem Is a Regulatory One, Not a Preference

This is the part that surprises people, and it has hard numbers behind it.

Approved Document F sets minimum intermittent extract rates for kitchens at 30 litres per second where a cooker hood sits adjacent to the hob and vents to outside air, or 60 litres per second where no hood is fitted or the hood does not vent outside. Continuous systems must reach 13 litres per second on boost.

A recirculating hood, the type most often specified over an island because ducting through a floor or across a ceiling is awkward, pulls air through grease and carbon filters and returns it to the room. It reduces odour and grease. It does not remove water vapour.

For that reason it is not treated as extract ventilation under the regulations and carries no specified minimum performance requirement. In an extension or major refurbishment that adds a kitchen, a mechanical extract fan venting to outside is required. A recirculating hood is permitted in addition to that, not instead of it.

There is a further point specific to open plan layouts. Where the kitchen is open to a larger space, extract capacity is commonly specified upward to compensate for the greater volume, with 60 litres per second during cooking a frequently cited benchmark.

Ductwork Is Where the Specification Quietly Fails

Part F rates have to be achieved under operating conditions, not at the fan intake in a laboratory.

That distinction matters because duct runs eat performance. A single 90 degree bend can reduce effective airflow substantially, with reductions of 30 to 50 percent reported depending on the run and the fan power. Long flexible hose adds resistance and collects grease.

The practical specification is short, rigid, smooth walled duct, with two 45 degree bends replacing any 90 degree turn where the layout allows. Extract must discharge to external air rather than into a roof space or wall cavity.

On an island this is a floor or ceiling problem that has to be solved during structural design, because the route runs through the slab or the joists. It is not a decision that can wait for the kitchen supplier.

Noise Is the Complaint That Arrives First

An extractor, a dishwasher, a television and a conversation compete in one volume, off hard surfaces, with very little to absorb them.

The materials that make a modern extension look good are the same ones that make it loud. Large format tile or polished concrete, a glazed rear wall, minimal curtains, a flat plastered ceiling.

Where the room has to be open, acoustic treatment is worth designing rather than retrofitting. Soft flooring in the living zone, curtains rather than blinds, upholstered seating, and an acoustic plasterboard ceiling over the living end where budget allows.

The Second Space Is What Households Actually Miss

If the television is on, it is on for everybody. That works in a house of small children and becomes difficult in a house of teenagers, shift workers or anyone working from home.

The useful question at design stage is not whether you want an open plan room. It is where the second person goes when the first person is using the main one.

Broken Plan Keeps the Light and Loses the Problems

Broken plan retains sightlines and shared daylight while introducing partial separation. It is a different arrangement rather than a rebrand.

The devices that achieve it:

  • A change in floor level between kitchen and living zones
  • Half height walls, or a run of low storage used as a divider
  • Glazed internal screens, which separate acoustically while passing light
  • A structural pier or column used deliberately rather than concealed
  • A snug or study taken off the main space, with a door
  • A lower soffit over one zone, which defines it without enclosing it

Each interrupts sound and defines a zone without closing it off. The room still reads as one space and stops behaving like one.

The Middle of the Plan Is the Part Everyone Forgets

Opening up the ground floor makes the new part brighter and frequently makes the original part darker, because the daylight source has moved further from it.

Rooflights over the deepest part of the plan are usually the most effective answer, since top light reaches further inside than light entering horizontally through a rear wall.

That is a structural stage decision. Rooflight positions interact with joists and beams and cannot be revisited once the roof is framed.

Layout Choices That Make Open Plan Live Better

Where full open plan is the right answer, a few decisions make a material difference.

Put the sink and dishwasher on the run furthest from the seating rather than on the island facing it. Duct the extraction properly rather than accepting a recirculating unit because the run was awkward, and size the fan to overcome the resistance of the duct rather than to its headline rating. Zone the lighting so the kitchen can be switched off entirely while the living end stays on.

Place the rooms that do not need daylight, meaning the utility, cloakroom and storage, in the darkest part of the plan. Utility rooms carry their own 30 litres per second extract requirement, so moving the washing machine out of the main volume solves an acoustic problem and a ventilation one together.

Most of what makes a good open plan kitchen living room comes down to those decisions being taken in the right order rather than to the concept being right or wrong.

When Open Plan Is Clearly the Right Answer

It works well where the existing ground floor is cramped and subdivided into rooms too small to use, where there are young children and sightlines matter more than acoustic separation, where the household entertains regularly, and where a second reception room exists elsewhere in the house.

In that last case the open plan space adds to the options rather than replacing them, which is the version of it that almost nobody regrets.

The Question Worth Asking Before You Commit

Not whether you want an open plan kitchen. You probably do, and it will photograph beautifully.

The question is what your household does in the evening, and whether that still works when two people want different things at the same time. If the answer is comfortable, build it open and specify the extraction properly. If it is not, broken plan gives you the same light, the same connection and somewhere to go.
